About the Company

Capitec Bank is one of South Africa’s leading digital banks, serving millions of retail and business banking clients. Known for its technology-driven approach and commitment to innovation, Capitec continually invests in modern data platforms and cloud technologies to improve operational efficiency, enable data-driven decision-making, and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

The Challenge

Capitec’s existing financial subledger and reporting platform was reaching the end of its lifecycle. The on-premises environment incurred rising licensing and maintenance costs while no longer meeting the organisation’s long-term reporting, scalability, and regulatory requirements.

Key business challenges included:

  • High infrastructure and software licensing costs.
  • Limited historical data retention, supporting only 40 days of data compared to the five years required for regulatory compliance.
  • Fragmented reporting and delayed data synchronisation affecting governance and audit readiness.
  • Performance limitations impacting executive reporting and cross-entity financial analysis.
  • The need to support future business growth, including additional business units such as Avafin.

To address these challenges, Capitec evaluated modern cloud data platforms capable of providing greater scalability, improved performance, and lower operational overhead.

Our Solution

Michiel van Aarde, serving as a Senior Data Architect through CyberPro Consulting, played a key role in evaluating and designing the future-state architecture for Capitec’s financial reporting platform. Working closely with stakeholders, he helped assess cloud data platform options and contributed to the proof of concept that compared Snowflake and Amazon Redshift against the bank’s technical, operational, and regulatory requirements.

The project focused on identifying the most suitable cloud-native platform to modernise Capitec’s financial reporting and subledger environment.

Key evaluation criteria included:

  • High availability and built-in disaster recovery.
  • Long-term storage with rapid access to historical financial data.
  • Role-based security and comprehensive audit capabilities.
  • Scalability to support multiple business entities and future growth.
  • Seamless integration with existing banking platforms.
  • Reduced operational complexity and infrastructure management.
  • Modern reporting capabilities through technologies such as Streamlit.

As part of the proof of concept, both Snowflake and Amazon Redshift were evaluated across performance, scalability, operational efficiency, and total cost of ownership.

Benefits to the client

The evaluation demonstrated several advantages of adopting Snowflake as Capitec’s future data platform:

  • Lower total cost of ownership through independent compute and storage scaling.
  • Improved scalability to support increasing data volumes and concurrent workloads.
  • Simplified platform management with minimal operational overhead.
  • Enhanced compliance through long-term data retention and comprehensive audit capabilities.
  • Faster access to financial and regulatory reporting.
  • A future-ready platform capable of supporting advanced analytics and modern data applications.

Technologies and Methodologies Used

  • Snowflake
  • Snowpark
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Amazon Redshift (Proof of Concept)
  • Confluent Kafka
  • Microsoft Power BI
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Streamlit

Following a comprehensive proof of concept, Snowflake was identified as the preferred platform for Capitec’s financial reporting modernisation initiative. The evaluation demonstrated superior performance, scalability, operational simplicity, and cost efficiency compared to alternative solutions. By defining a future-ready cloud architecture, the project established a strong foundation for improved governance, regulatory compliance, and faster financial reporting while enabling Capitec to scale its data platform as the business continues to grow.
